Very fruity and drinkable, of course that is not the same 12yo Bunna as some years ago, lost totally of its maritime notes such as iodine, seaweed and kippery notes, I guess this is now better for the mainstream - overall very nice (but lower rating than for older 12yo bottlings)

Affordable, well-presented and always a reliable choice: if there is such a thing as the perfect gift bottle, Bunnahabhain 12 would be it. Sherry-driven, oily and virtually unpeated, the nose combines orange peel, peaches and shortbread with hazelnuts, treacle and hints of sea breeze. Sweet and sour notes, ginger and bitter wood spices accompany the rich mouthfeel before the taste shifts gears towards spearmint, cocoa and brown sugar. Walnuts, stewed fruits and a touch of mocha fade in the lasting and resinous finish. This malt punches above its weight! RATING: 4.0/5.0 stars ≙ 87 pts → FIRST-CLASS

It is simple, but does all the basics well, the higher abv than most standard 12 year is welcome.

red fruits, cherries, chocolate, orange, spices, pepper, oak, almonds, not very complex but rather enjoyable flawless sherry
Archer8726 nov 2018 7:56 pm
What a nice standard. The 46.3% fit perfectly. The focus has been moved a bit far in the direction of the sherry barrel, but he is good to face.
Dre738619 oct 2020 11:41 pm
Clearly some fruity sherry notes and spicy, full taste without being too hefty. Pretty smooth. As far as I can remember the older bottling, this new one is more sherrycask driven, where the older on appeared more spicy to me. Still a great whisky, never disappointing for its price.
KayMeertens8521 oct 2018 9:40 pm
More sherried than the standard 12-year-old, especially in those red fruits. The sherry influence in the standard one leans more towards caramel.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2019/05/13/feis-ile-2018-bunnahabhain-open-day/ The old faithful, ha! - currently made up of 75% bourbon-matured juice. N: Finally, a whisky with some decent ageing signs, though those casks are still dominant. Notes then of vanilla putty cream, a slight lactose fungal depth and rich & literal bourbon notes. T: Fairly weighty presence, malty, dry, creamy & spicy. Everything’s well tempered but there is an underlying uneasiness from some spicy heat lurking in the wings. F: The finish is like a creamy Jim Beam bourbon which spoils any illusions of grandeur beyond the sum of its parts. C: Despite wildly differing batch variations, I always liked the 12yo. This is a fair example though there are still 1990’s bottlings going at auction for the same price as contemporary expressions.

Something connoisseurs underestimated this molt. In my opinion, a very solid and high-quality whisky, the same old and kind, but not the one that many distilleries have been producing in recent years. You can feel the honesty of aging in an honest barrel, not to mention good strength, cold filtration and natural color. For beginners, a very worthy copy that is worth the money!

Bunnahabhain is lucky to have such a great malt in the core range. Bourbon cask and nuttiness complement each other wonderfully to create a malt that is mild but very expressive for 12 years. A very neat PLV.
OlivierSegers8426 mar 2018 7:45 pm
Good price/quality but a quite one-dimensional Bunna with predominantly peaty taste...
Thermidor8218 jun 2021 8:51 pm
This new "red stripe" Bunna 12yo seems to be more on the casks than the previous version was. I don't recall quite this much sherry notes in the previous one.

Nose - fresh, powerful enough, sherry-orange-pomegranate, at the end a little cherry pops out, promisingly - 22 Taste - decently knitting, cherry-sherry, flat - 21 Finish - slides into some not very noble wine, openly sour, a rather long but not very pleasant aftertaste - 20 Balance sheet - 21 Total: 83-84, closer to 84, overstay the previous 12-year regulars a little more like, but this one is quite good as the base

For me, without a doubt one of the best 12-year-old standard whiskies on the market. A prime example of how to create and produce a multifaceted and complex whisky in large quantities without having to set a marketing machine in motion that drives up the price. Here you get a high-quality whisky at an affordable price, and that deserves the highest praise. - March 8, 2019
Tommyknocker8618 jul 2026 6:15 pm
Still a classic, one of the best standards from a distillery. The sherry cask dominance of earlier bottlings is somewhat reduced again, which suits it well; it's a bit dirtier, more maritime. Lovely!

09/28/2025 - 33 ml Blind test in a glass 1920, it is very different from the more than 200 whiskies I have tasted and I was certainly unfair, as it turned out to be a whisky that demands an entire bottle to appreciate, as a single dose prevents you from following the unfolding of all the complexity involved. The lack of alcohol on the nose is also unusual, but the alcohol on the palate didn't even seem like a 12-year-old, as I noticed when I opened the label. A "nerd" classic that deserves a bottle and thus contributes something fair to my notes. Thanks!

Haven't had this bottle for quite a while but thanks to Black Friday I was able to pick up 6 bottles for 34 EUR each. Stellar deal. Still love this whisky. It's amazing. "This entry level Bunnahabhain bottling comes in a redesigned bottle. This 12 year old single malt Scotch whisky is a light, fresh dram, bottled at the higher strength of 46.3% - for more complexity and flavour." N: Fresh and sweet right away. Very welcoming. Heavy sherry influence which I don't mind because the DNA of the distillery still shines through. Coastal notes. Walking on the coast of Islay, fresh ocean air breezing through your hair. Salty air and water with a hint of seaweed. Plums, figs, cherries and sultanas. (95) P: Soft, supple. Plums, figs loads of cherries and very nutty. A little sweetness, malty, juicy. Coastal elements, salt and seaweed. (94) F: Sherried, mochaccino, balanced salty tang. (92) 95 / 94 / 92 = 93.6667 --> 94 pts / 100

Considering its price, it is one of the best core range whiskys. Exceptional price performance. Tasteful sherry notes, fun bourbon touches on the nose. I really don't know what else to expect from a 12-year-old bottle for 50-60€. The Coastal part is very approachable and lowkey. Super enjoyable Price performance: Very high Would I buy it again?: Yes.

A pleasant basic whisky for evening sipping. The aroma is sweet and fruity, but at the same time I also smell salty butter in it, which is very funky. The taste is drier than I would expect from the aroma, but it is a beautifully complex sherry. I'm a bit bothered by the alcohol pungency. Good value for money.

Such a high quality, well made, 'entry level' malt. I find this just in it's sweet spot, perfectly balanced between cask influence and spirit character. Value (£35) : 9/10.

For a standard 12-year-old bottling this is an absolute recommendation compared to other 12 standards. Especially price-performance match. Can even score in direct comparison with the 18-year-old brother.

One of my favorite standards and proof that Islay whiskys don't need peat to be excellent. Dark, dry fruitiness combined with a little spice. A really great malt for the asking price.

The old 12ka is denser and oily, and what sherry, no one felt in it, right there is a sweetness of alcohol. It seems that the sherry barrels in the dough became less, or the refil bourbon was replaced with firstfill, or they were deceiving that the recipe of the dough did not change, or ... all together.
Peatyjohn8626 apr 2025 4:28 pm
Quality malt, that is rich, clean with dark fruits, malty chocolate and spicyness. A soft long dry sherry oily finish . Enjoyable. Side by side with Bunnahabhain An Cladach it takes the medal for more complexity and flavours. The Bunna cask strength 12 of course is a flavour bomb in comparison. This is still a good accessible malt to kick off your journey, as I did.

Aug 2018 ======== Bunnahabhain 12. A miniature with old branding. Aroma is very sherry in a green apple sort of way, plastic and sherry, very spiritous, faint coffee grounds, washing powder, raw alcohol. Wow, weird. I'm not sure I like it but it softened given time. Taste is pretty punchy with lots of salt, peach-apple background. Good balance of sweetness. A little vodka-like into the finish. A bit rough I thought - I will have to try a newer bottling at some point to compare. (3.1/74) ---------------------- Nov 2024 ======== Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old, 46.3%, SMSW, Natural Colour and NCF. Plain orange colour – looks coloured, but isn’t. Aroma is orange cream chocolates from Quality Street. Now that I’ve written that down it’s all I can smell. Vague hints of peach and damp sticks, but these are very much background to the dominant note of orange cream chocolates. Later on there’s some chlorinated water. Body is watery. Taste is soft on impact but bigger on flavour. Chilli notes throughout, intensifying on the finish – that’s the dominant vibe for me on the palate. It’s backed up by subtle chocolate, a thin note of salted caramel, ethanol flavour without the associated heat/burn, a very subtle hint of struck match. The ethanol and chilli spice aren’t quite floating my boat. Tastes younger than its 12 years. I came back to this 6 years later thinking perhaps the whisky has changed or my palate has changed, but actually I think everything is more-or-less the same! (3.2/77)

Nose: Great juicy dark fruits, really these fruits are just jumping out of the glass: raisin, prune juice, a hint of grapes. Some mild to slightly dark chocolate there as well, and some nutmeg and clove, with just a hint of salt; just slight oak, and vanilla and caramel are quite light. The fruits really are the star of the show here, though; there are also sultanas, a touch of orange, acidic prune, and some freeze dried strawberries. Later, just a minute perfume note as well. Palate: Slightly warm on the palate, and the sherry influence from the casks definitely presents itself up front: slightly more bitter fruit, but still in that general vein of red, orange, and purple dried fruits. It's plum, Luxardo cherry, oily raisin, prune. There is still that bit of orange, which is followed by some wood sugars and a stronger oak note, a bit of tannin and astringency; the mouthfeel is medium, and a we end with some light nuttiness. Finish: The finish is generally medium length, lots of cozy warmth from the sherry, with those prunes, raisins, and dark cherry; those fruits are slightly acidic and dried, and there's even a hint of stone fruit from peach or nectarine at times. It's oily, and there is some lingering oak there, slightly drying, and ends with just a bit of wood char. After one of the tastings, about an hour after finishing the glass, a hint of sweet sherry fruit was still coming back to the palate.

A diverse, deep, aroma-dense and yet crystal-clear island malt of twelve years. After the first comparison of the old and (visually) new equipment I can say: The Bunna 12 remains true to itself. The differences are marginal. The "old" Bunna looks a bit more mature, spicier; the "new one" a bit younger, but with a little more sherry and more pronounced mint freshness.

Tasting as a blind sample: After the dissolution, I was amazed at first. So I didn't remember the Bunna 12 (as far as I know from older batches). Back then, the one with was much more voluminous. Maybe it's the batch? In any case, he was very nice, but couldn't really convince. Edit: Much better at the second tasting! Apparently very dependent on the form of the day :)

Writing this review because Whiskybase requires a review for this rating. Whenever I try a whisky I give it a win or loss versus other recent whiskies and compile the data using the Colley Matrix Method. The result is a rating from 0 for the worst whisky I've tried to 100 for the best. For Whiskybase I adjust the rating to a 67.5 to 92.5 scale.

Another year later I had the opportunity to taste this Bunnahabhain again; the cardboard note I had noticed last time was completely gone – a fine whisky! Update 2: Even a newly opened bottle shows no cardboard note, which in turn shows me that whisky is a natural product. Old rating: Almost a year later, I would write a similar review, but this bottling has a rather unpleasant "cardboard" note, especially in the finish. I hope this only applies to the first dram of the bottle.

I think this was a 2020 bottle not sure. But what a horror dram. Bunna is all about sherry , poor sulphered sherry.
Thatch8602 may 2022 5:01 pm
Fruity malt, very flavorful for 12 years, noticeable cask influence from both the oak and sherry. Partly too alcoholic, tingles on the tongue, even with water. All in all a good inexpensive entry-level whisky. I lack the sophistication for more, something special.

Es look. No, smell it first. Deep pededal raisins, apricots. Awesome. Sherrybom first class, Glendronach Allardice 18 comes to mind. Taste just as impressive as the smell predicts. Toffee, caramel, magic balls, raisins in the distance - if you look well, definitely not compelling. Fine wood in the soft dry finish. Wow. Torch roof. 2/2 Seriously tasting, after Glenmorangie 10 & QR as an appetizer: great scent, Islay or not - I don't smell peat. Again very tasty, with some peppermint filling as in after eight. Delicious dry sherry aftertaste. Still nothing, no peat. TO BUY!

A delectable unsmoked Islay whisky. Matured in ex-sherry, 1-st fill ex-bourbon, and refilled casks. Non-chill filtered. Not coloured. Slowly forming mid-size primary legs. Slow narrow secondary legs. Trailing droplets.

Aroma: caramel, candy, dark chocolate with raisins, blackcurrant jam, dried fruits (apples, pears), honey, flowers, lime, spicy pickle cucumber, menthol freshness. Very pleasant aroma, sweet and fruity, dominated by sherry. Taste: dried apples, pears, prunes, spices for mulled wine, a little pepper, bitter roasted walnuts, peanut butter, salted caramel. Finish: medium length, dried apples and pears, not sweet uzvar, a little salinity on the tongue. Rating: 85

One of my favorite standards, which I always like to buy, tastes better than most 18-year-olds. The sherry makes itself more through nutty aromas, and less noticeable about the fruit. The salty, slightly mineral Bunnahabhain character is beautifully interwoven with the barrel flavors and the oak.
IthiLkr8510 jun 2026 3:18 am
As I recall from the first time I drank it, it was a macho-style, salty, and strong-flavored whisky, but drinking it again after a long time surprised me with the prominent nutty aroma. It has good balance and expresses the sherry flavor well.
Bomshanka8514 feb 2020 2:38 am
Comparative tasting of the Bunnahabhain 12 (2016 - old design) and 12 (2019 - new design). Very nice sherry casks in both versions, but 2016 seems more restrained, less forced on wood, while 2019 is brighter and more sappy. 2016 is noticably darker in colour than 2019 (both uncoloured) which alludes to more refill being used in newer bottlings. Probably the same old song of fewer quality casks around. The older version scores higher for a more complex and less strained experience. Both are great quality unpeated islay sherry whiskies and a good price for 12 years.

I didn't expect to like this one so much. I prefer (at least lightly) peated whiskies, and sherry cask finishes can be on the 'too sweet' side for me. But Bunnahabhain 12 turns out to be a wonderfully balanced maritime drink with plenty of depth, that kept me fully interested for three drams straight. The first bottle was emptied in good company, and a second one is all but certain.
effective_frame8506 oct 2023 5:44 pm
Quality standard for non-peated Islay. Salty, creamy, red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, dried cranberry) and vanilla toffee. Nice and well-presented, nothing to complain about.

Bunnahabhain 12 YO Category: Single Malt Producer and bottler: Bunnahabhain Distillery (Distell Group) Region: Islay ABV: 46.3% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 03/22/2021 Barrel type: Ex-bourbon and ex-sherry Age: 12 YO Filtration: not carried out Dye: none Nose. Salt water, smoked cherries, prunes, black dried apricots and raisins, milk chocolate, toffee, peanut butter, walnuts, wet sawdust, iodine, apples, pears, plum jam, licorice, ginger, pepper. Woody, mineral, marine and noticeably sherry nose. Gives a good impression of quality work in the selection of barrels. Taste. Very woody and nutty (like biting off a piece of a freshly planed board and eating it with oatmeal cookies with peanuts and almonds), salty, light pepperiness, bitterness of dark chocolate and sweetness of caramel and dried fruits, sourness of berries and citrus zest. Smooth at 46.3%, easy to drink and with an interesting whisky bouquet. Aftertaste. Average. There is no particular dryness, bitterness. Roasted almonds, coffee, grape combs, wood, frozen berries. For some reason, I like the aftertaste of this whisky the most. Bottom line. A little unusual whisky, something new. An interesting combination of sherry character with a maritime profile without a hint of peat and with high-quality, active barrels. Obvious its own original style, deserves high praise. Score: 86 out of 100.

How did Bunnahabhain do it? Perfect balance, intense and elegant aromas, extremely supple on the palate. If I don't name its year, I'd think it's a 14~16 year old whisky. Provide perfect work at low price, This is a whisky that benefits the drinker. How respectable! 86 points for taste, plus 2 points for price, for a total of 88 points.

12/09/2022 82 / 100 Color: Natural amber. Not chill filtered. AROMA - 20 / 25 Rum-like and intense. Lots of sherry notes and chocolate-dipped prunes. Vanilla, toffee, peaches, and a touch of marzipan. Later, a touch of earthiness and forest floor emerge. The alcohol is well hidden. TASTE - 21.5 / 25 Salty-sweet with a hint of jam and wood. Plenty of pepper and ginger, along with caramel and milk chocolate. Then a bit of smoked fruit, and that's it. It doesn't give me the "WOW" factor it does to others. FINISH - 20 / 25 The finish is consistent, not too long and fades with warming smoke. BALANCE - 20.5 / 25 It's actually different in aroma, taste, and finish. It's not quite my cup of tea, and I don't fully understand the concept, but you might like it.

Cracking Islay single malt. Very drinkable, but with plenty of layers and elements that get highlighted on each different sip. Often on sale for around £30 from Waitrose or Amazon, this one's a no-brainer. Top marks for 46%, no chill-filtration and natural colour also.
Sven758317 dec 2025 9:19 pm
Around 2018, the regular 12-year-old really impressed me. Back then, relatively early in my whisky journey, I rated it 88 points. I had another sample in 2025, and it's still solid – but of course, it doesn't reach those heights anymore. A nice, straightforward sherry whisky at a reasonable price. For my taste, though, it's a touch too peppery. Otherwise, it's pleasant but not outstanding.
S_S8706 dec 2019 11:23 pm
A great standard for me. The perfect introduction to the whisky experience, just to try for friends. In direct comparison with the 18er weiger spice, but more fruit. I like it as much as the 18's. One who belongs in the bar.

First impression Nose: Great nose! Cherries and other red fruits, a light hint of mint and sea air, unfortunately the nose from the blender glass is quite alcoholic, I haven't noticed that in other glasses. But the impression of cherry has never been so pronounced. Mouth: Unfortunately, a lot of alcohol comes through straight away. Is that because the bottle has been open for a while? Or is it really the blender's glass? I'll have to check in a few days. Otherwise, I have a lot of sherry dried fruit varieties that overlap here and are difficult to tell apart. I can still clearly taste dates in the crowd, but then it becomes difficult. Finish: In the finish I have quite a lot of alcohol but also dry fruits Second impression Nose: More intense! Lots of wood, which wasn't there the first time. Now you can also smell dried plums and dark chocolate! Together with the cherries, this creates a smell like a MonCheri! There are now also very clear PX notes and dark, very sweet grapes. The alcohol has almost completely disappeared, perhaps I was just too hasty the first time and didn't give the wine enough time in the glass. Mouth: This time the taste is extremely mild and balanced. No comparison to the first sip. Where did the alcohol go? No matter, the great sherry aromas definitely dominate from here on. Dark fruits, a hint of honey and light notes of coffee (is that from toasting the barrels?) are my clear favorites and complement the taste of cherries and dates, which I can now also detect in my mouth. Finish: Here too, the alcohol is now a thing of the past, the complexity is not very high, but the impression of sherry remains for a very long time. For me, a medium-long finish that is not very complex but is clearly sherry and dried fruit.

A literal milk chocolate bar, covered in pedro ximenez sherry. Wonderful aroma. Taste is weaker. Cool in the start, a hint of sherry in the start, but fades in favour of minerals and slight salt. On finish... What is that ? Iodine ? Sherry aftertaste. Good aroma, a little bit lacking taste, decent finish. One of the best regular releases in current market. Great example of 84-85.

An honest dram, which sins in the pungent and annoying alcoholic presence, influence of the important cask (until it becomes slightly astringent) and a sour vinous note that goes little with the sweetness of the remaining sweet and creamy bouquet. He does a bit of punching with himself

A very good sherried whisky, especially age and price taken into account. Good fruitiness is balanced with a little punch from ABV and oak. In my opinion, the best "neat". The nose gets a little better with water, but it goes at the expense of taste. I'm going to buy a bottle of this!

When first time tasting this whisky I had a WOW moment. This was better than the high expectations that I had! The neck pour was brilliant. After some breathing time the nose and taste are a bit less. Am craving for a bit stronger version. Its rich, sweet (sherry influenced). To me it tastes like loads of raisins and some light salted nuts. Great stuff! And the price is good here. After a while things mellow out a bit, but still great. This bottle will be replaced when empty. Edit: when almost empty it will become a bit sour when left too long in the bottle.

For me, one of the leading 12-year-old whiskies in the core range. Great complexity — honestly, I’m still discovering new things in it (even though it’s not my first bottle).
jhbae8720 aug 2026 2:12 am
Aroma: Thick fruit, sweet, refreshing citrus, savory malt notes The scent itself is complex, appearing as various fragrances blend together. Pleasant scents with absolutely no strong alcohol smell; surprisingly, the fragrances are not overpowering. Flavor: Spicy, salty, smoky, fruity sweetness At first, a spicy taste is felt, followed by a faint smoky aroma and a salty taste. Taking another sip, the sweetness of red fruit alternates with the salty taste. Finish: Spicy, smoky, salty The finish is not strong; after the spiciness, smoky and salty flavors linger, finishing subtly. If sufficient training is achieved, I think I would give it 89 points.

Usually a bit averse to highly sherried whisky I was pleasantly surprised by this. Rich bitterness and not too sweet. Medium depth and complexity. Well structured and integrated, slightly developing in a simple way, if a little thin. At the £39 paid I was impressed.

This whisky is very balanced, not too sweet not too peated. Arrival is very fruity and then it turns to roasted nuts, salty seawater. Finish is long and sweet.

lanakias19509 jan 2026 5:05 pm
This is truly an impressive whisky to have in your collection. It costs only 50 to 55 euros but it can offer much more than whiskies with bigger names or higher age statements. The aroma is very lively and you can find spicy notes of ginger and cinnamon alongside caramel and sweetness. However the palate is what is truly impressive and somewhat reminiscent of the Glenfarclas 15. It starts smooth but then hits you with a relentless spiciness before turning salty and slightly smoky with a dose of sweetness. It makes your tongue tingle a bit and the mouthfeel is very powerful. The finish is excellent providing a warm and peppery sensation that is very pleasant. For this price point there are very few whiskies in my opinion that can match its quality. Despite being 46.3% ABV you do not feel any harsh burn because it is well hidden within the complex profile of the spirit. It is an amazing whisky.
