For some reason Manzanilla sherry doesn't work for me - always leathery, dirty and little sulphury

I had this dram first during a blind taste event (Proef Olympics Ledendag 2) as the 8th (and last) dram (after the welcome dram), and later on re-evaluated a bit i had left in the sample bottle.

On first impression, there's a sweet-sour whiff of something lactic and musty on the nose, almost sulphury and reminiscent of cabbage or baby vomit. Probably due to sulphurous compounds resulting from the distillation process ("spirit sulphur"). Once past that, there's both fruitiness (apples, apricots) and sweetness (bubblegum and/or popcorn), a certain vinuous aspect and a very muted sense of oak in the background. Also a nuttiness that at times seems to shade into aromas of leather and/or polish. Going by the nose, I'm not expecting a whole lot of tanninicity, but rather a juicy, spirit- and (wet?) cask-finish-driven affair. Let's see... Mmmmmh, good attack: juicy, oily, and sweet, with an immediate sequitur in the form of prickly oak (so I was wrong on that one) and a slight sting from the alcohol. So yes: this is immediately yummy and makes you yearn for a second sip before the first one has even gone down. Very juicy, lively, and impactful. As often happens, the nose also improves after taking the first sips, becoming more warm, welcoming, and sherry-infused. So are there only good things to say about this one? Sadly, no: for even if the initial impact is really eventful and thick, the overall development remains somewhat curt. Too swiftly, taste and aromas drop off a cliff, leaving behind slight heat and, at most, some tingling citrus. Not exactly the platonic ideal of a whisky finish, if you catch my drift. Verdict: substantial, but feels a bit curtailed. But, to be fair, even if the whole thing is rather front-loaded, with pretty much the whole experience taking place in the beginning, it's still a very entertaining and flavorful whisky. I'm glad I tried this (even if I won't buy a bottle), and it has certainly intrigued me enough to now be on the lookout for more modern Tobermories (I hope that's the correct plural) to try.

The manzanilla gives it a great touch. Delicious. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

Another wonderful tobermory, the average quality of the distillery is both UA and OA admirable and I say that as not necessarily the greatest lover of very salty whiskys.

Tobermory 2008 MMcK VS Tobermory 12y Manzanilla Finish they certainly have the same dna, when talking about the cheesy cow dung and mineral notes you get. still, the 2008 MMcK shows the distillery character much better by being held in a washed out cask for only 9 years. the 12y old manzanilla finish seems to have been finished in a very active cask, as the sweet wine input is not to be dismissed. when you are a tobermory fan, you will like both of them. still, i would sa that tobermory is not a beginners dram and you should be into this style of whisky. besides of the cheesy cow dung, some sulphury parts come in play (which i often get with craigellachie for example). both nice drams. however, the bit older and manzanilla finished 12 year old won this round for me.

this whisky didn‘t fulfilled my expectations. high price and a little weak overall. i normally like tobermory! i compared this one with the 12 yo SV bottle ID:127189. it had no chance... even though i have to say: the finish was better than the nose and palate!

Gorgeous dirty and maritime - just my thing! In the nose, however, a bit reserved at first.

COLOR: amber - very edgy, idiosyncratic 12 J. Single Malt - very special, nothing for beginners - complex and powerful - the maritime character is clearly recognizable - €100 for a 12-year-old is an announcement, but yes it is special I think it's too expensive, it doesn't taste good enough for me,

Delicious salt almond taste, fresh rye bread, nut oil, everything a bit funky and strangely bitter. It's okay, but too expensive for what's on offer. And although I like Manzilla ripening, this malt doesn't really convince me across the board.

The barrels seem to have had 1-2 assignments before. The Manzanilla keg does not give him the sweetness he needs for a nice overall package. Solid, but rather one of the more modern malts ..... drunk and already forgotten.

As a fan of Tobermory, I am a bit divided in this bottling. On the one hand, wild and stormy as I like it on the other hand, the spiciness is a bit overused and leaves him in my view as unbalanced. From Manzanilla barrel I would have expected more influence. In the nose comes too little and in the finish he says goodbye far too early. I miss sweetness and fruitiness that could have been a great counterpoint to the spice. But he is the way he is, which is ok even if he does not fully meet my taste - 04.04.2018

Notes from a blind tasting. Headstrong, it leaves me at a loss. For me an inharmonious nose, the sour fruit notes run right through to the finish. Water smooths the edges a bit, but also makes for a very dry finish. Overall, it is less of my taste.
Phalat8915 apr 2021 6:58 pm
There is a bit of a feel for the taste of peat or the earth, as Ledaig is made here as well, so it can be said to be minimal but it feels a minimal earthy character in the whisyk.
craide8520 may 2020 8:59 pm
Round, not too complex tobermory. Delicious and tasty. I don't really notice the special thing about the Manzanilla barrel. That was somehow different with the 13er Glendalough. I probably don't need a bottle.

Great dram. The Manzanilla finish adds a great sherry note, but doesn't mask the distillery character. The 46.3% also fits perfectly.

December 07, 2020 Strong and fruity with a dirty note. It fits exactly as it is. Unfortunately, I can't see the manzanilla finish.

Good Drinks - bourbon and sherry tones are specially suited to the scent of hay, and they stand and taste with citrus fruits, grains and delicate cravings. In the aftermath of the initial rise of the raisins it is drying up and it ends on a spicy conclusion

Strongly sour, dark sherry note, somehow tasty, and yet almost "over the top". There is also a certain stable note. In the mouth there is an absolute contrast program: instead of the dark, sour notes, light sweetness sizzles over the tongue. At first really surprisingly sweet, soon accompanied by a tangy wood spiciness, then there is a lot of nuts and a pleasant coffee is added to the finish. The finish is dominated by sherry, spices and dried fruits, the sharpness of the wood also remains a bit, a little bit vinous. The finish is medium long, maybe a little too short for my taste. Exciting malt, varied, something special and probably nothing for every day. But in any case: Somehow tasty.

Eyes: Orange and yellow smell. Nose: A little fermented grain, damp sesame peanut candy, wet dough, multi-grain biscuits, a little freshener, a little floral and some oxidized taste. The traces of the barrel are obvious. Pour it out and wake up. It will be much better. Taste Palate: a very heavy bitter bottom, almost spit out...canned fruit, very irritating, as if chewing chili, wood flavor, a little wheat bran finish Finish: long, bad wood, Peanut skin, rice wine body: light, with tannins Nose: 83/100 Palate: 75/100 Finish: 75/100 Body: 75/100 Overall: 77/100 Overall: I remembered the fear of being dominated by Gran Kunch 12.

Nose pretty showy and fat. Very much, overall there is something missing (CS ?!) to play at the top. Chocolate, mild, creamy. Tzd dry and slightly salty and somewhat nutty. Not a mainstream sherry. slightly peppery finish.

This is a very interesting variant of sherry, and most probably a fascinating alternative to dirtyish heavily PX-treated hogsheads with watery and sulphury outcomes. Manzanilla - why not?
DannysFavorites8629 mar 2024 9:08 pm
A nice evolution of the 12 year old standard with a Manzanilla finish. Sweetness with an emphasis on citrus and orange notes, dried fruits and hints of coffee and chocolate. At the price of ~80 euros at the time, it was definitely a purchase recommendation for fans of the Tobermory Distillery

Nose: very malty, Oranges, Caramel, Oak spices, red Apple, nutty, Plums, Salt, Toffee Taste: salty arrival, red Apple, Oranges, Vanilla, Ginger, Caramel, Peach, Chocolate, Banana Finish: medium-long with a medium to strong Alcohol note Overall: A damn good malt.Tobermory always makes interesting Whiskies. The Price is a bit steep for a 12 year old, but i'd say it's worth it.

A quite peculiar expression from Tobermory craft masters. Manzanilla is not an obvious finish, nor a sherry like any other else. The marriage between the Spanish casks and the breezy character of the distillery is just perfect: a full bodied malt, with lots of warm honey and fruity (citrus first, then peach mostly dried grapes), velvety and subtly spicy on the palate. Its richness of details and bittersweet nuances makes it seem older than it is, displaying a very pleasant mouthfeel. Another brilliant expression from one of my favourite distillery, never disappointing.

- from a sample A flawless malt really. I would've scored 90 or higher easily, if only it didn't carry an uber-premium pricetag. Even for 46.3 % it has a big oily body. Sweet and sour profile with some astringency in the back palate and finish. Loads of fruits, apricot jam, papaya, kiwi. Almonds and nuttiness in the undertones. Both the nose and taste are nicely integrated, but only in the taste it reveals it's talents. There's so much happening I have a hard time identifying more notes specifically, but they hint at something more.
